Stand for Five

My working-stiff winter anthem: when the cold drags on, stand against it, put the workday in, and count down to five o'clock and home. Looking back, it's terrible advice, the kind of thinking that had me trying to find nobility in being exploited.

Ding!
Ding!
Ding!
Ding!
Dong!
Ding!

When the air gets cold
And the snow gets old
And the winter's dragging on and on
When the lights get dim
And the wind blows in
And back at home is where you belong

Stand against the ice and snow!
Stand against the cold!
Put the work day in
Five o'clock's comin'
Won't be long 'till we're back at home!

Ding!
Dong!
Ding!
Ding! Ding! Ding!

When the work you do's
Something that matters to
Other folks in community
Can't just stay in bed
And hide your weary head
Got to push through, not be lazy!

Stand against the sun and rain!
Stand against the pain!
Put the work day in
Five o'clock's comin'
Won't be long 'till we're back at home!

Ding!
Dong!
Ding!
Ding! Ding! Ding!

If you don't matter much
Take another look
Be surprised at who noticed you
People get routines
And just being seen
Sometimes is enough to do

Stand against the traffic clogs!
Stand against the trolls!
Put the work day in
Five o'clock's comin'
Won't be long 'till we're back at home!

Ding!
Dong!
Ding!
Ding! Ding! Ding!

If your shift is weird
Five o'clock's not here
Take a beat, center self, and breathe
It's a metaphor
For your end of work
Whatever that time may be

Stand against the ticking clock!
Stand against the grind!
Put the work day in
Five o'clock's comin'
Won't be long 'till we're back at home!

Ding!
Put the work day in
Dong!
Five o'clock's comin'
Ding!
It won't be long
'Till we're back (Ding!)
At home! (Ding! Ding! Ding!)
