Just Me and the Beast
Dawn comes, and there are no bodies and no banners. The parts I called for help were never out there fighting beside me. Imaginary friends don't stand up to real physical needs.
The grey light crawls across the ice
To show the cost and name the price
But where the Captain made his stand
There's nothing but this broken land
And where the Jester's laugh was lost
There's only mud and bitter frost
No bodies, banners, blood, or bone
I've always been out here alone
And a twisted, sick, and broken thought
Begins to bloom in what I've fought
If every ghost was in my head
And every friend I had is dead
Then every blow that beast has known
Was struck by me, and me alone
And if I'm all I ever had
Then maybe I am not so bad
The Scholar's scroll, the Captain's steel
Was just a hope I tried to feel
A pretty lie, a waking dream
A broken, sad, and desperate scheme
To think that someone else would fight
For my small patch of fading light
But no one came, and no one died
There's no one left for me to hide
And in the silence, I can see
The only one who fights for me
The only one who's ever there
To breathe the cold and poisoned air
The only one who'll never flee
Is the broken, bloody, bastard me
And a perverse and fragile hope
Gives me just a little rope
If every ghost was in my head
And every word they said, I said
Then I'm the one who held him back
Through every single, damn attack
I am the last man on the field
And maybe I don't have to yield
Maybe I don't have to die
