The Good Man (Is a Lie)
The 'good man' who rescues and fixes everything ends up building a beautiful prison. This is me seeing the cage I built while calling it help, and owning my share of the dysfunction.
I saw a broken, fragile bird, and put it in a cage
I called it home, I called it safe, I turned a brand new page
I was the splint, I was the shield, the doctor and the priest
I fed you all your medicine, and starved my own damn beast
I didn't see I wasn't healing, I was just in charge
Of a beautiful and tiny ship I'd chained up to my barge
And that was wrong
'Cause the good man is a liar, with a kind and steady hand
He'll build a perfect prison that you'll never understand
He'll be your god, he'll be your guide, he'll be your only light
And you will never learn to fly, and you will never learn to fight
He'll love you with a perfect love that slowly turns to lead
The good man is a monster that you're better off is dead
You came to me with open hands, to share my heavy load
You saw the cracks, you saw the pain upon that lonely road
You offered me your empathy, a beautiful, clean cup
And I just laughed and spat in it, and told you to buck up
I couldn't stand to see the pity shining in your eyes
My sentry saw a coming war in your own sad surprise
And that was wrong
'Cause the good man is a liar, with a kind and steady hand
He'll build a perfect prison that you'll never understand
He'll be your god, he'll be your guide, he'll be your only light
And you will never learn to fly, and you will never learn to fight
He'll love you with a perfect love that slowly turns to lead
The good man is a monster that you're better off is dead
For seventeen years I held my breath, a lighthouse keeper's vow
To keep the fire a secret, and I don't know how
I thought that I was saving you, a noble, quiet grace
I was just a coward who was scared to show his face
I let you love a statue, a perfect, hollow man
And now I have to tear him down, and I don't have a plan
I don't have a plan
So kill the good man
Let him die
The good man is a lie
He was just a lie
I'm sorry
