A New Vow

After everything, choosing to stay, but not on the old terms. The promises we made young assumed things neither of us could keep. This is me recommitting to who she really is, and asking the same for me.

You're on your knees, your eyes are wet
With all the words of your regret
You say you broke the vows we made
A seventeen-year-long parade
Of all your failures, all your sins
And this is where the war begins
Again, you think, with you the prize
Reflected in my tired eyes

But the vows were made by children who
Had never seen a storm roll through
They made a promise to the sun
And had no place to hide or run
When the hurricane of all our years
Drowned out their hopes and fed their fears
The vows did not break, my love, they burned
A lesson we had never learned

I was not there to hold your hand
The truest king of a dying land
A sentry on a broken wall
Just waiting for the world to fall
You were not there to feed my soul
To make a broken spirit whole
You were just trying to survive
To keep your own small flame alive

'Cause the vows were made by children who
Had never seen a storm roll through
They made a promise to the sun
And had no place to hide or run
When the hurricane of all our years
Drowned out their hopes and fed their fears
The vows did not break, my love, they burned
A lesson we have finally learned

So let them die, those pretty lies
And let the grief well in our eyes
We're not those children anymore
Standing on a peaceful shore
We are two survivors, you and I
Beneath a dark and honest sky
And the only crime I can recall
Is that we were just human, after all

So let us make a new vow, here
In the rubble of our shared fear
Not to be perfect, not to be whole
Just to be the anchor for the other's soul
A new vow
For now
