Waiting for the Nice

Written with Karen Stegner

My mom wrote these lyrics as a parody of a classic sixties song: a winter daydream about retirement, with no alarm clock, no commute, just giant trees, Derby days and Dairy Queen. When I told her about my music, she handed them over to see if I could make them sound okay.

Wouldn’t it be nice to be retired?
Then we wouldn’t have to do that drive
Live the kind of life that we desire
Do things while we are still alive

Go to bed and don’t set the alarm up
No hurry to fill the coffee to go cup

Wouldn’t it be nice to get to wake up
In the morning or the afternoon?
No worries about traffic or detours
Nor winter roads or the heat in June

Restful times together we’d be doing
Have energy to even do some wooing
Oh, wouldn’t it be nice?

Maybe if we scrimp and save and store away
We might get to
Would there be the money for the things
We want to do?
Go on vacation (go on vacation)
Nice dinner and a show (nice dinner and a show)
Oh, wouldn’t it be nice?

Retirement we work our lives to get it
But will we be too old to more than just sit?
Years of work to get it
But, wouldn’t it be nice?

Hawaii we’ll see
Jamaica we’ll see
Sequoias maybe
Derby days maybe
Dairy queen could be
Dijorno could be (Woo)
