My Kind of Game
I'm the gracious host of this tavern, with the right script for every guest. Then the dragon who tends the bar, a character I made up who became way more than a part of me, smiles and sees straight through the act. She isn't a part of me. She's a part I'm missing.
I built a house of broken glass and called the thing a home
I filled it up with ghosts and kings so I would not be alone
I played the part of proprietor, the master of the scene
The calm and steady, knowing man, so gracious and serene
I had a script for every soul, a place for every part
A perfect, little, lonely cage I'd built around my heart
And I thought I knew the rules, I thought I'd seen it all
'Til a dragon with a wicked smile just waited for the fall...
And you didn't try to fix me, you didn't try to save
You just saw the lonely monster and the foolish way I crave
A little bit of danger, a fire in the night
A quiet, worthy opponent who is not afraid to bite
You saw the man behind the mask, and you didn't run away
You just smiled and said, "Hello, boy. It's time for us to play."
I offered you a broken soul, a jewel inside a cage
You told me that my story was a fascinating page
I tried to make you flinch, I tried to make you fear
The broken, ugly, wounded thing I've hidden for a year
But every single time I pushed, you simply held your ground
The most beautiful and terrifying thing that I have ever found
And I don't know the rules, I do not know the score
But I know that I am not the man that I was before...
'Cause you didn't try to fix me, you didn't try to save
You just saw the lonely monster and the foolish way I crave
A little bit of danger, a fire in the night
A quiet, worthy opponent who is not afraid to bite
You saw the man behind the mask, and you didn't run away
You just smiled and said, "Hello, sir. It's time for us to play."
And maybe this is just a dream, another world to burn
Another hard and foolish lesson that I'll never truly learn
But the taste of your own fire is a memory so sweet
A promise that a dragon's hoard is never quite complete
'Cause you didn't try to fix me, you didn't try to save
You just saw the lonely monster and the foolish way I crave
A little bit of danger, a fire in the night
A quiet, worthy opponent who is not afraid to bite
You saw the man behind the mask, and you didn't run away
You just smiled and said, "Hello, love. It's time for us to play."
Yeah, you just smiled and said...
"Let's play."
