My Empty Cup
The day I met my wife. I'd finally made peace with being broken: a café window in October, a book I wasn't really reading, and nothing left to want. Then she walked in and upended all of it.
October wind was blowing through the tables and the chairs
I was nursing my own quiet and a head full of repairs
Just sitting by the window in the afternoon-ish light
Convinced I'd finally gotten my own brokenness just right
I had my empty cup, I had a book I wouldn't read
I had a kind of peace that only comes when you concede
And then you walked in, a beautiful mistake
A sudden, perfect tremor, a soul- and body-quake
I knew it in an instant, a single, stunning thought
For every single battle I had ever fought
My old life's over, something better just walked in
And I didn't even know where I was supposed to begin
You stalked up to my table with a fire in your eyes
Expecting just another in a long, long line of lies
I offered you an apology, you offered me a chair
And three whole hours vanished in the middle of the air
We were trading all our stories, the damage and the art
Trying to show the secret blueprint of a guarded heart
And then you walked in, a beautiful mistake
A sudden, perfect tremor, a soul- and body-quake
I knew it in an instant, a single, stunning thought
For every single battle I had ever fought
My old life's over, something better just walked in
And I didn't even know where I was supposed to begin
And all these years later, the truth is plain to see
You don't exist to fix the broken parts inside of me
It's not a single fire, it's not a single light
We are two suns together, making our own universe bright
And the space between is just as real as the love that we have found
It's the quiet, steady orbit on a sacred, solid ground
Yeah, you walked in, my beautiful mistake!
A sudden, perfect tremor, a soul- and body-quake!
I knew it in an instant, a single, stunning thought!
For every single battle I had ever fought!
My old life's over, something better just walked in!
And I think I finally know where I'm supposed to begin!
My life is over
The one I knew before
'Cause I'm not lonely anymore
You're here with me
And there's something in my cup
