The Molt

This is the job literally wearing my body down while I kept being told to produce. It's the moment I decided to tear out of that life and leave the empty shell behind.

Shuffle the colony, change up the chart
Give the grubs new roles, tear the soil apart
Shifted a few inches to a brand new space
Just to freeze to the roots in the exact same place
Can't feel my legs, can't remember to breathe
The frost in the soil won't let me leave
Staring at the wall of this dirt-packed room
Waiting for the clock in a ten-inch tomb

Shivering blind, completely tapped out
Not enough battery to even care about
The food is up top but the muscles are dead
Trapped in the static right inside my head

Shell's gone rigid and I'm locked inside
Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
Tear my own back open just to get some air
Screaming at the dirt 'cause there's nobody there
Takes everything I got just to split this seam
Waking up dead from the American dream
Yeah, the air is cold but the friction burns
When the molting starts, the freedom's earned

Got the fuel that I need but it's too far away
Starving in the dark at the peak of the day
Nervous system firing like a broken wire
Got no heat left to start a fire
Just a twitch and a jerk as the engine shuts down
The heaviest, emptiest bug in this town
Told to keep digging, told to produce
While my own damn body is cutting the juice

Leave the dead husk glued to the bark
