We Wrote the Rules

A reminder to both of us that we've made our own rules before, on our own terms, long before anyone else was watching. Nobody handed us this marriage's rules, so we're allowed to rewrite them.

You talk about a promise made, a vow before the law
A piece of paper in a frame, the one thing we all saw
You say that was the sacred text, the day our lives were bound
I say it was the chapter next to the one we'd already found
In a quiet room, with tangled sheets, eight months before the priest
We made a vow in whispered beats, a secret, soulful feast

'Cause we wrote the rules back then, my love, a law for you and me
We built this kingdom from the dust, for all the world to see
And if the map we drew back then is leading us to pain
Then we'll unroll the parchment and we'll draw it up again!
We wrote the rules before, my dear, and we can write them now
This is our life, it's our own vow

The world will tell us we are wrong, they'll tell us we're in sin
They'll sing the same old, tired song of where our love fits in
They'll talk of what a marriage is, a single, narrow track
They do not know the cost of this, the breaking of your back
And mine, upon a wheel of should, a wheel of what is right
I'd rather walk into the wood and scream into the night

'Cause we wrote the rules back then, my love, a law for you and me
We built this kingdom from the dust, for all the world to see
And if the map we drew back then is leading us to pain
Then we'll unroll the parchment and we'll draw it up again!
We wrote the rules before, my dear, and we can write them now
This is our life, it's our own vow

This isn't me, just breaking free, a selfish, wild desire
This is me, trying to be, the keeper of your fire
And mine, before they're both snuffed out, by a law we didn't write
This is a love that's worth the doubt, and worth this terrible fight

We wrote the rules
We write the rules
It's our own vow
