The World is Made of Stuff
Basically a homework assignment turned in as a song, to show I understood a coping trick for panic: when your head starts spinning, touch something real, like a river rock, a cat, or a favorite mug. Like most homework, it's a little out of touch with reality, which is ironic for a song whose whole point is "touch reality."
Got a river rock that's smooth and flat
The fuzzy, sleepy, purring cat
A windowpane is cool and slick
A brand new, shiny plastic brick
The silky feeling of a sheet
A little puddle in the street
Your favorite mug is hard and round
The best darn mug you've ever found!
Oh, the world is made of stuff, it's true!
For me to touch, and so can you!
So put your hand on something near
And make the spinning disappear!
A little smudge, a little smear
Just proves that you are really here!
So grab a thing and hold on tight
And make it all feel real and right!
A little jam left on a spoon
Beneath the Tuesday afternoon
That sticky spot upon the floor
You never got to clean before
The mud outside is wet and brown
The best darn mud in this whole town!
Some week-old frosting, kind of sweet
A messy, wonderful, strange treat!
Oh, the world is made of stuff, it's true!
For me to touch, and so can you!
So put your hand on something near
And make the spinning disappear!
A little smudge, a little smear
Just proves that you are really here!
So grab a thing and hold on tight
And make it all feel real and right!
The perfect world is just a dream
It's always bursting at the seam!
With gooey, gritty, grimy things
The silly, happy song life sings!
So don't you worry, don't you fret
It's the messiest that's the best one yet!
Yeah, find the beauty in the grime
And have a wonderful, weird time!
The bumpy bark upon a tree... (It's real!)
The slimy worm that wiggles free... (It's real!)
The squishy feeling of some dough... (It's real!)
The coolest feelings that you know! (It's real!)
