Ghost of Matilda
Matilda came to us as a tiny, scared black kitten on a cold night, and she spent her short life quietly checking on each of us like it was her job. She was barely a year old when we lost her to cancer. This one's my goodbye, and I still miss her.
Little ball of black fur on a night so cold
You knew the house to help you, only two months old
But too many kitties already were staying there
So they brought you to us with your piercing stare
You were very tiny, and at first so scared
The first days you hid under shelf and behind chair
But when night would come you'd come and yell so loud
So your mama hooman came to be your crowd
Oh fluffy Matilda
You were sweet and kind
Black and pretty kitty
Gone before your time
Oh sweet mama kitty, life had been so cruel
Maybe that's why you watched like we're in school
Making rounds between us every single hour
Sit and stared politely, you were never sour
Oh fluffy Matilda
You were sweet and kind
Black and pretty kitty
Gone before your time
Oh sweet mama kitty, life had been so cruel
Maybe that's why you watched like we're in school
Making rounds between us every single hour
Sit and stared politely, you were never sour
Oh fluffy Matilda
You were sweet and kind
Black and pretty kitty
Gone before your time
Barely a year later, though you were so young
You meowed and swatted at us when we brushed your tum
That's when we first noticed that growing lump
Took you to the vet who called it cancer bump
Oh fluffy Matilda
You were sweet and kind
Black and pretty kitty
Gone before your time
We tried so hard to help you, everything we did
But you just got weaker underneath the bed
Medicine not helping, the cancer grew
Until you were in such pain nothing else to do
Oh fluffy Matilda
You were sweet and kind
Black and pretty kitty
Gone before your time
Now her body's ashes
In a box we keep
Somehow she's still with us
There's no need to weep
But I still miss you, Matilda
